Triathletes make the 1500m swim, 40km cycle, then 10k run look easy, don’t they? Not so much when they get to race end they don’t.
These photos I took at the Triathlon World Series in London’s Hyde Park in 2014 illustrate this contrast perfectly.
It struck me that throughout the race faces were masked by a blank canvas, nothing-to-see-here kind of deal, but on crossing the finish line, they were spent, with no strength left to even hide the pain.
Olympic champion? Doesn’t matter. Come second in the race? The pain is still unbearable. The only time it doesn’t hurt? When you win a la Mario Mola and Gwen Jorgensen…
