Dare to Do – Taking on the Planet by Bike and Boat by Sarah Outen

Sarah Outen set off to circumnavigate the globe by human power alone. Human power, it turns out, is not just the physicality of cycling across countries and rowing between oceans but also the psychological power required to keep on going.

Easy enough in the best of times but the whys keep on arising in the worst moments.

Yet it’s people met along the way, from all cultures and backgrounds, that make this journey so wonderful and emphasizes that most people in this world are utterly fabulous.

Description

The product description on Amazon for Dare To Do by Sarah Outen reads: “The inspirational adventure story of Sarah Outen’s five-year 25,000 mile expedition looping the Northern Hemisphere by rowing boat, bicycle and kayak.”

That doesn’t even touch the sides of what Sarah’s book brings you, tbh.

Humanity rules

Parts of the book still sit with us, long after we’ve read it, including Sarah’s meeting with a recently graduated Chinese student who drops everything to ride with Sarah for a few months, despite being a beginner cyclist. Neither speaks the other’s language but the bond they form is wonderful.

Or the excruciating description of Sarah literally tying herself down in the cabin of her rowing boat in order to ride out a major storm while trying to make it across the Pacific. The experience continues to haunt her even now… and us to be honest.

An adventure story with so much humanity within. Love it!
